Analects of Goethe

  • Self-knowledge comes from knowing other men.

  • The intelligent man finds almost everything ridiculous, the sensible man hardly anything.

  • The biggest problem with every art is by the use of appearance to create a loftier reality.

  • The deed is everything, the glory is naught.

  • The hardest thing to see is what is in front of your eyes.

  • Piety is not a goal but a means to attain through the purest peace of mind the highest culture.

  • The little man is still a man.

  • The human mind will not be confined to any limits.

  • Science arose from poetry... when times change the two can meet again on a higher level as friends.

  • Superstitioin is the poetry of life.

  • The man with insight enough to admit his limitations comes nearest to perfection.

  • The man who occupies the first place seldom plays the principal part.

  • The mediator of the inexpressible is the work of art.

Wise sayings let me look back into my life. These analects of Goethe tell his progressive spirit and as I read these sayings, also I could learn about much refined expressions.

"The human mind will not be confined to any limits." I like it most among the analects. Some limits may could restrict a deed, but couldn't control a spirit.
